The WHS softball team battled until the final out but ultimately fell to Bridgewater-Raritan, 8-6, on Senior Day in a hard-fought contest on Saturday afternoon. Despite the loss, the Blue Devils showed resilience throughout the game while honoring the seniors who have helped shape the program over the past four years.
Before the first pitch, Westfield celebrated its senior class in a ceremony recognizing the players and their contributions to the team. Family members, teammates and fans gathered along the field as the seniors were introduced one by one, creating an emotional atmosphere before the matchup began.
Bridgewater-Raritan came out aggressively, scoring early runs to take control of the game. Westfield responded quickly, however, stringing together hits and taking advantage of smart baserunning to stay within striking distance. The Blue Devils continued to battle throughout the afternoon, refusing to let the game slip away.
After a difficult first few innings, Westfield held the Panthers scoreless in the last three. Head coach Caitlin Cheddar said, “We played really strong, sound defense in the last few innings, which allowed us to come back a bit. We have struggled with defense all year, so it was good to see, but we wish it had started earlier in the game.”
Westfield’s late-game push made for an emotional seventh inning. Senior co-captain Stella Pugliese had a standout performance on the pitcher’s mound and gave Westfield an opportunity to come back in the final inning. With the deficit cut to just two runs, Westfield took the plate looking to make a final push. Unfortunately, sound defense and tough pitching held the Blue Devils to zero runs and sealed the win for the Panthers.
Senior co-captain Natalie Ardente said, “We played more competitively towards the end, but we had just dug too big a hole to crawl out of.”
Bridgewater-Raritan answered with an insurance run at the top of the seventh before closing out the game despite one final push from Westfield in the bottom half of the inning.
After the game, Cheddar praised her team’s determination and the leadership of the senior class. “This group has meant so much to our program,” Cheddar said. “They’ve worked hard every single day and set a great example for the younger players. Obviously, we wanted to get the win for them today, but I couldn’t be prouder of the fight and heart they showed.”
With the loss, Westfield moves on, looking to regroup as the Blue Devils continue the final stretch of their season. The Blue Devils are back in action Monday at 4 pm against Watchung Hills.
