To get the hat trick, senior tri-captain Luke Spaide scored a goal with two seconds left in the third quarter to further the Blue Devils lead against St. Josephs-Metuchan 9-3. In the fourth quarter, the Blue Devils only kept their lead resulting in a 11-6 win for the WHS boys lacrosse team.

In the Blue Devils’ last game against Haddonfield Heights, they went into double overtime and Spaide stood out once again, getting the game winning goal. Following this close and intense game, the team knew they needed to come into this game strong with a good mindset. Spaide said, “We knew that we needed to redeem ourselves from our past two games, Haddonfield and SPF. We worked to have communication on the entire field so that both defense and offense were strong.”

The defense held up strong with junior goalie Tyson Varner totaling 13 saves in the game and only allowing 6 in. Varner said, “We came into this game fresh. We didn’t want to put too much on our minds and just wanted to play to the best of our abilities. I felt like the defense really helped me out this game and motivated me to improve my gameplaying aswell.” The team worked to communicate with each other so that the opposing team was unable to score and led to countless turnovers.

The other side of the field is what helped the team secure this win. The offense found ways around St. Joe’s tight defense on multiple occasions. Junior tri-captain Koby Waldman said, “We have had a lot of close scoring games this season and it was really important for us to create a gap in this game. We knew we could do it and this game proved how well we can play when working together as a team on and off the field.”

The Blue Devils have one more regular season game before they enter the state tournament. Head coach William Wertheimer said, “We are very much concentrating on our game on Monday before we focus on states. It is senior day so it will be a great game while also being an emotional day. After that game, we will begin our plan for states and, hopefully, win.”

The Blue Devils are hoping to get another win on Monday against Caldwell at 4:30 p.m. at home and celebrate their seniors.
