Grant Como, a pitcher on the baseball team, announced his commitment to Brown University on Sunday evening.

Como has only completed one season with the Blue Devils as he appeared in nine varsity outings as a freshman. He finished his freshman season with 13 strikeouts in 13 innings and is aiming to continue his success this upcoming spring season.

Como will be joining the Brown Bears, who compete in the Ivy League, in the fall of 2025. Last baseball season, Brown finished with a 13-23 overall and a 8-13 conference record. Brown is located in Providence, Rhode Island, and has been a part of the Ivy League since 1935.

Como said, “I committed to Brown because it’s a school where if I weren’t going to play baseball, I would still love to go there.”

Como also looked at a few other Ivy League schools including Columbia and Princeton. He was also in communication with Boston College. However, Brown was the perfect fit for him. “The academics stood out because it is one of the most prestigious colleges in the country,” said Como.

While Brown was a short-term goal for Como, his long-term goal is to play baseball professionally. “If I am given the opportunity I would absolutely love to play baseball professionally. It is every baseball kid’s dream to play in the MLB and I’m willing to shoot for that goal and hopefully be able to make it there someday,” he said. For now, he is focused on training hard and improving his pitching arsenal day-in and day-out.

Como has three seasons left with the Blue Devils, and looks forward to competing this spring in the county and sectional tournaments. He and Westfield are striving to win a county and state championship this season. Como said, “This team is dangerous and can go places no other Westfield team has gone. This is our year to win a county and state championship.”
