Erin Doherty, a senior softball player, announced her commitment to Salisbury University for Softball on June 8. Doherty was the first softball player in the senior class to announce her commitment to play in college.
Officially on varsity since her sophomore year, Doherty has been a huge asset to the team both on and off the field. She led the team during the 2022-23 season as the highest home run scorer with 5 home runs. Coach Caitlin Cheddar said Doherty “is the epitome of a team player. She is selfless and always finds a way to bring a good attitude to the field.”
Next spring, Doherty will bring her talents to Salisbury, MD, just west of Ocean City, MD. Though they lost in the Division III national championship last year, Salisbury Softball had an amazing season, ending the season with a record of 49-6.
Doherty’s incredible performance in the 2022-23 season undoubtedly provided her with offers from a large variety of colleges. Despite her many options, Doherty ultimately decided on Salisbury for a variety of reasons. She “wanted to play for a college that was very competitive and had a chance to win a national championship.” On the academic side, Salisbury has a very good program in kinesiology, the major that Doherty wants to pursue.
Doherty’s interest in Salisbury started long before their offer to her. “I went to multiple camps there and always loved the girls on the team,” said Doherty. Going into spring 2025, Doherty looks forward to having an accomplished season with her new teammates.
Though becoming a college athlete is a difficult transition for most, Doherty is very prepared. Being a three-sport athlete, also playing for the field hockey and basketball teams, Doherty is adjusted to a rigorous practice schedule. Still maintaining her grades and athletic performance, it is clear to see that Doherty will continue to have a successful career.
