Senior Matthew Bonn announced his commitment to Lancaster Bible College to play volleyball on Oct. 30 via Instagram.

“The attributes of Lancaster Bible College that most attracted me to the school were how close-knit they were to each other and to the community and how they are focused on a Christian education for all,” Bonn explained. “The professors really care and take time to know and care for everyone they teach.”

That sense of connection and purpose made Lancaster Bible College stand out as the ideal environment for Bonn, who has spent his high school years growing not only as an athlete, but also as a leader on and off the court.

Bonn credits much of his development to the WHS boys volleyball program, which he says prepared him for the demands of college-level play. “The program helped prepare me for college volleyball through the strict coaching and reliability that the coaches demand of us,” he said. “As an up-and-coming program, we need to improve practice to practice and not be amazing immediately and the coaching staff really helped with my improvement by helping me improve my arm swing, serve and positioning on the court.”

Over the years, Bonn has carved out standout moments that reflect both his competitive drive and his impact on the program’s history. He points to his sophomore year as the most memorable chapter so far. “My most memorable moment of my high school career was during my sophomore year when I helped bring my team to be the first team in the boys volleyball program to make it to the county finals,” he said. “It was such a memorable moment beating Elizabeth in three sets.”

Teammate and fellow senior Ben Bukiet-Beker has witnessed Bonn’s development firsthand. “Matthew has grown from a naturally gifted athlete into someone who truly understands every part of the game,” Bukiet-Beker said. “Each year, he’s become more confident in his decisions and more consistent in his play. He’s stepped into a leadership role, guiding teammates with both his voice and his example.”

Bukiet-Beker emphasized Bonn’s composure and impact during high-pressure moments. “Matthew has learned how to stay calm in pressure moments, which helps the whole team settle in. Overall, he’s become the kind of player everyone looks to when the game gets tight.”

He added that Bonn’s blend of intensity, control and work ethic sets him apart. “He works harder than almost anyone in the gym, constantly trying to refine his skills… Most importantly, he lifts the team’s energy every time he steps on the court.”

As Bonn prepares for the next chapter at Lancaster Bible College, both his teammates and coaches know he leaves behind a legacy defined by dedication, leadership and steady growth—qualities sure to carry him far at the collegiate level.
