Josh Caramagno, a senior lacrosse player at WHS, announced his commitment to the University of Lynchburg on July 13th. Caramagno posted a face-off win percentage of 64 percent in the 67 face-offs he took last year.
Lacrosse was not the first sport of choice for Caramagno. Initially, he was a football player. “I started lacrosse a little later than everyone else. I started around seventh grade,” Caramagno said. “I played football at the time, and I wanted an off-season sport that would keep me conditioned, and then, I just fell in love with it after I started.”
During his sophomore year, Caramagno experienced a true obstacle in his career. He spent some time in the hospital dealing with collapsed lungs. Caramagno’s teammate and fellow senior Michael Marshall said, “I’m kind of inspired by him because of what he went through with his lungs. He battled back and now he’s back playing and committed to a Division Two school for lacrosse.”
After his senior lacrosse season, Caramagno will take his talents to the Lynchburg Hornets Division Two lacrosse team. Lynchburg plays in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference where they finished on top of the 2022-23 standings with an 8-1 conference record. The conference includes schools such as Sweet Briar College, Roanoke College and Averett University. “I think he will have a pretty good [freshman] year for sure. Then, by junior year, he will be an absolute animal, no questions asked,” Marshall said.
Many of the school’s attributes attracted Caramagno to central Virginia. “Academically, I knew I could succeed at that school,” Caramagno said. “I have family near the University, and I have family that lives in Washington that wants to move to that part of Virginia once I graduate.” One of the biggest factors in his decision was the compassion from the coaches. “When I was sick, they were one of the schools where [the injury] was not such a big burden on them,” said Caramagno.
Caramagno is looking forward to a successful senior season at WHS before he enters his collegiate career in the fall of 2024.
