From the first kill to the last, Westfield was on a roll, conquering Woodbridge with diligence and skill. However, it was a serve from senior Logan Welsh that won them the game, as his ace was too powerful for the Barrons to receive. Welsh’s serve brought the Blue Devils’ lead to 25-17, winning them the game in three sets.
Fresh off a win over Morristown and their first Union County Tournament title in history, Westfield’s record is currently 20-5. The matchup against Woodbridge was the first five-set match for the Blue Devils, as both teams agreed to play best of five to prepare for the state tournament.
Senior tri-captain Benjamin Bukiet-Beker said playing five-sets “gives [the team] confidence for the other possible five-set games and states to come.”
Westfield carried their momentum into the second set. The Blue Devils started strong with precise passing, resulting in multiple kills. However, Westfield faced some challenges as Woodbridge started to rally back, scoring points and narrowing the gap. After holding a 3-point lead, Westfield managed to pull ahead and ultimately won the set by 8 points, with a score of 25-17.
With the state tournament on the horizon, the Blue Devils are looking to carry momentum from their county run and successful regular season. “Counties was a big win for the team and our energy,” said Welsh. “I think we’re looking forward to continuing to see what we can do in states.”
Senior tri-captain Ethan Cha led the game in kills with 10, while Bukiet-Beker followed with 9. Junior Michael Warmington and senior tri-captain Matthew Bonn also had six and five kills, respectively. Sophomore Gunner Gaspard and Welsh led the team in assists with 12 and 11, respectively, creating an impressive overall team effort.
Head coach Ed Saggio said the team is “looking to make a long run” in the state tournament, and that their standard of play is based on their Union County Championship win over Elizabeth.
Westfield understands that they must continue competing to maintain their success. Welsh mentioned that the team is aware they might face their rival, Scotch Plains-Fanwood, and they are eager for the opportunity to play against them. Welsh also said that the team is excited for the state tournament and is looking to continue their winning record.
The Blue Devils have the No. 3 seed in the Group 3 State Tournament and will take on Ridge in the first round on Wednesday, with game time to be determined.
