TJ Halloran, the point guard for Westfield’s boys basketball team, announced his commitment to the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Wednesday via Instagram.
Halloran has been a member of the basketball team since his sophomore year and is the primary ball handler for the Blue Devils. During his junior season, he recorded an impressive 187 points, 123 rebounds, 111 assists and 51 steals.
Over the summer, Halloran played for the New Jersey Shore Shots in the Hoop Group Showcase League. There, he received attention from several different universities due to coaches attending most of his games. He also received a Union County honorable mention for the Watchung division.
Halloran will be joining a team that finished 21st in all of Division III basketball for the 2021-22 season with an overall record of 23-6, and a 15-3 Liberty League record. Additionally, RPI reached the Sweet 16 in the Division III NCAA tournament. RPI is located in Troy, New York.
Halloran considered schools such as Stevens Institute of Technology, Catholic University, WPI and Dickinson, but he believes RPI is the perfect mix of great academics and basketball.
“I’m looking forward to hanging out with the team and building friendships that last a lifetime. On my visit, I got a sense of what the social life was and it was the perfect fit for me,” said Halloran.
RPI provides a great business program, and Halloran will most likely pursue a business degree during his time at the university.
Halloran, a senior, has one more season left as a Blue Devil. He hopes to continue the tradition of successful Westfield basketball that he helped establish last year.
