WHS senior, Gettysburg commit and boys basketball captain Max MacEacheron delivered a performance to remember against Matawan, placing his name in the school record books. MacEacheron buried 9 three-pointers, setting a new Westfield single-game record, and finished with 40 points—good for third all-time in school history. This historic night highlighted the years of work MacEacheron has put into basketball.

Senior tri-captain Jake Russell, who has played alongside MacEacheron throughout his high school career, emphasized how much growth led up to the moment. Russell described MacEacheron’s development as “quite impressive and very significant,” noting that he began on the freshman team and refused to settle. “By the next year, he was a major part of the varsity team, and it was due to his work off the court,” Russell said. His work is his countless hours spent at the YMCA getting stronger and getting more in shape. He also added that MacEacheron transformed his game over time, evolving from being a pure scorer to a reliable two-way player.

Offensively, Russell believes MacEacheron’s mindset makes him especially dangerous. Russell said, “He’s always scavenging to get his shots. His want to score the ball makes him dangerous.” That relentless confidence was on full display against Matawan as MacEacheron tallied point after point, shot after shot.

For MacEacheron, the record-breaking night represented far more than numbers. “This accomplishment means a lot to me personally because it reflects the hard work I’ve put in over the years,” he said. “For the program, I think it helps build momentum and confidence because when one player succeeds, it can energize the team.” He credited Westfield’s intense, competitive daily practices for preparing him to perform under pressure, explaining that constant challenges from teammates and coaches translate directly to game situations.

Watching from the stands, Meri MacEacheron, Max MacEacheron’s mother, felt immense pride. She noted that the record had stood since 1963, making the moment even more special. She reflected on years of early mornings, schedule juggling and even searching for basketball courts during family vacations to support her son’s passion. “It never really felt like a sacrifice,” she said, adding that it has been especially meaningful to see Max grow not just as a player, but as a confident, disciplined and selfless person who now gives back by mentoring and training others.

Though MacEacheron did something that had not been done in decades, he is still determined to be the best he can be. Russell said, “His work ethic is all to thank for his success as of late. Max’s work ethic is a perfect representation of delayed gratification and not expecting results right away. It has taken him years to get to this point, and all of his hard work is now paying off.”

In his final season as a Blue Devil, as of Jan.12, MacEacheron has scored 225 points on 45 3-pointers, eager to climb those numbers even higher. For his career, he is currently at 539 points on 133 3-pointers, something that only the most special can achieve.

MacEacheron looks to continue his magnificent season, trying to break his own record in a ranked matchup at Linden on Jan. 15.
