Westfield senior Sophia Montero announced her commitment to Colgate University for women’s tennis on Sept. 4th via Instagram.
Montero, a three-star recruit according to Tennis Recruiting Network, has been competing individually in the United States Tennis Association (USTA), the national governing body of tennis in the United States, instead of playing for Westfield.
Montero currently holds a record of 25-21 in 2022, is 12-4 against other three-star athletes, and holds a No. 17 ranking in New Jersey according to usta.com.
Colgate, which lost in the quarterfinals of the Patriot League Women’s Tennis Championship in each of the last five seasons (excluding the 2020 season due to COVID-19) looks to improve with additions such as Montero. Currently the team holds a 10-10 record and is fourth in the Patriot League standings.
Montero was in talks with other schools such as Wesleyan and Amherst but always knew Colgate was her top choice.
“I’m extremely pleased with my commitment. It was my top school for a very long time. I committed to Colgate because I love the coaches and all the girls on the team,” Montero said.
Montero looks forward to a strong finish to her senior season and is excited for her future in tennis.
