Noah Fischer, a smothering defender on the boys soccer team, announced his commitment to Hobart and William Smith Colleges on Aug. 25 via social media.

Since his sophomore year, Fischer has been a fixture in a suffocating Westfield defense and last year earned a spate of accolades. Fischer received nods from nj.com for its All-State second team and its All-Group 4 first team; he was also named to the All-Union County Conference first team and the All-Watchung Division first team.

Fischer will join a Hobart program that competes in Division III and last made the DIII NCAA Tournament in 2019. Hobart resides in the Liberty League and finished last season with an 8-7-2 record.

“Location, coaches, facilities, alumni connections,” Fischer rattled off as reasons he chose Hobart.

Hobart, located in Geneva, NY, was once an all-boys school. In the mid-20th century, it merged with the all-girls school William Smith to form Hobart and William Smith Colleges, as it is known today.

Fischer’s decision came down to Hobart and Colby, despite interest from Lafayette, Stevens and Franklin & Marshall. Part of his calculus in picking Hobart was “the size of the school and then the team,” he said.

Before he goes north to join the Statesmen, Fischer will get one last season as a Blue Devil. He was recently named to nj.com’s preseason player of the year watchlist.
