Shannon Gibbs, senior all-around gymnast for the WHS girls gymnastics team, announced her Commitment to SUNY Brockport on Nov 22. via Instagram.

Gibbs is the first member of this year’s gymnastics team to announce her commitment to compete in college.

SUNY Brockport is a public university established in 1835 in Upstate New York. Its name is derived from one of the founders, Hiel Brockway, who was a town builder and first resident of Brockport, NY.

Gibbs will join SUNY Brockport in the fall of 2024, competing for their Division III gymnastics team. SUNY Brockport finished this season with a record of 15-3, coming in first place at the NCGA East Regional Championship.

Whether she is on bar, vault, beam or floor, Gibbs brings a positive outlook, charisma and a sense of energy to the team. Examples of her positive encouragement include being there for her teammates when they are struggling or motivating them during their own events to help push them through to reach the next level.

“Shannon is one of the most hardworking girls you will ever meet. While attending both high school practice and club practice while also managing to do homework can get to be a lot, Shannon comes into practice constantly smiling and gives it her best. Gymnastically, Shannon immensely contributed to our team. Her high scores and clean routines are essential to our team and she is a super star. Shannon is a well rounded gymnast, a great friend and a supportive, caring teammate,” explained senior gymnast Vendela Surgent.

This high school season, Gibbs consistently scored between first and third place on bars, beam, floor and vault, totaling up to 91.225 points throughout the entire season. She is also a member of Surgent’s Elite School of Gymnastics, and she is on level one, the highest level a gymnast can be for her league. The league is known as Jersey Optional Gymnastics Association, and it offers girls age 5 through 22 the opportunity to be compete among other people within the state. Her final season with SESG will start in January, and it will end in April.

Despite interest from Westchester University, Gibbs ultimately decided on SUNY Brockport because, “The coach really showed interest in me and showed me I could be a big part of their team. I went to a camp over the summer, and I spent the night with one of the girls and I got to know everyone. I liked everyone and was then offered a spot. I can also focus on not just gymnastics but school as well. The major I want to go for is physical education and that is one of the best at the school.

Before she joins the Golden Eagles, Gibbs will prepare by enjoying her final season for club, preparing her for a fun and competitive college experience.
