Senior Billy Gerne, a midfielder for the boys varsity lacrosse team, announced his commitment to Trinity College on July 26 via instagram.

The Trinity commit has been contributing to the boys varsity lacrosse team since his sophomore year. Most recently, Gerne had major success in the 2024 season where he racked up 17 goals and 12 assists while helping to lead the team to a state championship. Among his most notable accomplishments includes his overtime game winning goal against No. 14 seed Bridgewater Raritan in the state semifinal game. In addition to lacrosse, Gerne is a striker on the boys varsity soccer team.

While playing  for the Westfield lacrosse team, Gerne said, “Coach Wertheimer made sure I was focused during the spring season on and off the field. A lot of my success is due to him.”

Trinity College is a private liberal arts college located in Hartford, CT, with an undergraduate population of about 2,200 according to the usnews.com. They are a Division III program, and compete in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. Gerne was drawn to Trinity because he will “get the best of both worlds.” With both competitive lacrosse and great academics, Gerne is super excited to spend the next four years at Trinity.

Gerne will be joining a Trinity squad that finished last season with a record of 9-7, before ultimately falling to No. 2 seed Wesleyan University in the NESCAC Tournament quarterfinals.

Senior teammate Christian Gilford knows from experience how important Gerne is to the Westfield lacrosse team. He said, “Billy is one of those kids you need to have on your team. He always has your back when things don’t go your way and always brings the energy.”

Gerne has one more season playing for the Blue Devils before heading to Hartford to play for the Bantams. He said, “I look forward to all the boys getting back out there and winning some big games.”
