Justin Lipschutz, a senior runner on the track and field team who specializes in the 100 and the 200 meters, announced his commitment to the University of Rochester on Thursday evening. Lipschutz will join recent Xavier commit Joe Pierro and company as the fifth Blue Devil male senior runner to commit to run track collegiately.

This fall, Lipschutz will take his talents to upstate New York and join the Yellowjackets, who compete at the Division III level within the Liberty League. On his reasoning behind committing to Rochester, Lipschutz noted that he was able to build a strong relationship with the head coach of the track program. Also, Lipschutz acknowledged the strong academic reputation of the school and that he would be able to excel academically in his program of interest in biomedical engineering.

Speaking about the other schools he considered, Lipschutz said, “The ones which showed a lot of interest were Stevens Institute of Technology and Union College in Schenectady, N.Y.”

This winter, the Yellowjackets finished tied for 25th out of 67 teams at the NCAA DIII Indoor Track and Field Championships in Birmingham, Alabama. And as of last week, Rochester is ranked within the top 25 for DIII track teams. The Yellowjackets will be looking to take home a DIII championship this spring before Lipschutz’s arrival, as the outdoor championship will actually be held at the University of Rochester.

For this spring and his final season of high school track and field, Lipschutz said he is “looking forward to some 100 [races] coming up. There’s a lot of really talented people in the county and section and it’s my favorite race.”
