Senior Niko Lukis, defensive back and kicker for the football team, announced his commitment to Trinity College on Oct. 13 via Instagram.
Trinity College, located in Hartford Connecticut it is a distinguished academic institution with an undergraduate class of 2,200 students. Trinity is a top team in the New England Small College Athletic Conference, which are often referred to as the “Little Ivies,” as it is a highly competitive conference.
When making his decision, Lukis said, “I really like the winning culture that they have there. Their football program is at the top tier of Division III and I’m blessed that I received an offer from them… Honestly, without football I don’t believe I would have been able to go to such a prestigious college such as Trinity, so I’m extremely grateful for all they have done for me.”
Although Lukis was only a starter his senior year, he is a two time letter winner, and he has been on the honor roll for 3 years of high school, which makes Trinity a great academic fit.
Lukis has been widely regarded as one of the leaders on defense. Co-captain Zac Wragg said, “He is a phenomenal person on and off the field. He is smart, athletic, and he is a great player. He’s the mold to our defense, and something we couldn’t live without. He recently changed his position to defensive back, which is one of the hardest positions in football, so I commend him for that, and I truly believe that he is one of the top defensive backs in the state.”
It’s not just Lukis’s skills that makes him a good player, but his work ethic as well. Co-captain Jack Martin said, “He’s the anchor of our defense. No doubt he is one of the most dedicated players on the team and worked extremely hard over the offseason, and it is showing dividends through the first six games this season. He is just relentless on the field, in the weight room and in the film room. He clocks in everyday and is ready to work.” Lukis’s hard working habits have proven effective this season.
Lukis is looking forward to the back half of this season and hopes to make a successful run in the playoffs in his final season as a Blue Devil.
