Junior Mary Lane announced her commitment to Montclair State University on May 9 via Instagram.

Montclair State University is located in Montclair, NJ. With an undergraduate population of about 18,000 students, the Red Hawks compete at the Division III level.

“I chose Montclair State because the coaches were always so nice and supportive,” said Lane. “Also, when I first toured the school, I loved the campus and the program felt like a perfect fit for me. I knew that I could grow there on and off the field.”

Head coach Patrick Naughter has been a staple for the Red Hawks for the past 17 years and Lane’s decision stemmed from his support and loyalty to the sport and program.

Lane has been playing soccer since she was six years old and has stuck with the sport “so long because it’s been something [she] has always loved. It also has built so many memories,” Lane said. Lane has been on the WHS varsity team for the past two seasons and has made her mark visible with 8 goals and 9 assists.

Teammate and sophomore Mairin Fowler said, “She’s a really great teammate and everyone kind of models themselves after her because of her work ethic and sheer speed on the field.” Lane’s agility and speed has even insinuated a saying on the team to “go Mary,” meaning hustle and sprint for every ball.

The community and support system from her teammates has motivated Lane to overcome struggles and helped her develop as a person. “My favorite thing about Westfield is how close the team is and how we all support each other,” said Lane.

Lane has found a family within her teammates which has inspired dedication to her craft. “Westfield influenced me as a player by making me more confident and hard working. It also taught me as a person how to keep going when things don’t go my way.”

Although Lane is excited about joining the Red Hawks, she has her eyes set on big achievements for her last season as a Blue Devil. “My goal for myself next year is to enjoy every moment. For the team I want us to go as far as we can into counties and states and make this last season really count,” said Lane.
