On July 24, senior Kieran Gerne announced his commitment to play lacrosse at Colby College via Instagram.
Gerne has been a key contributor to the Westfield Lacrosse program, coming off a strong season with 25 goals and 14 assists. During Gerne’s sophomore year, he helped Westfield secure its second consecutive state championship.
Located in Waterville, Maine, Colby College competes at the Division III level in the highly competitive New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC), and finished this past season with a 4-10 record.
For Gerne, the blend of a competitive lacrosse program as well as the high academics made Colby stand out. “I always wanted to go D1, but as I grew up I realized D3 would be a better fit for me because of who I am as a person,” Gerne said.
Senior Harrison Rekemier highlighted the work ethic and energy Gerne brings to the team. ”He is a very talented and hardworking player on the field and has the same work ethic off the field. He is always one of the guys in the weight room pushing himself and others. Kieran continues to have great energy no matter the score,” he said.
After playing lacrosse for 10 years, Gerne is excited for the upcoming season and the chance to finish his final year at WHS strong. “I’m looking forward to playing with my boys one last time and winning a state championship and a Kirst Cup”
Gerne is well-prepared to make a smooth transition into his freshman year at Colby, and Rekemier has plenty of confidence in his ability to make an impact at Colby.
“Kieran is one of the best attack men I have played with, and contributes to our offensive success. Every time I pass him the ball in an open spot I know it is going in the back of the net. His great vision allows him to set up a ton for others around him,” Rekemier said.
With one season remaining at Westfield, Gerne is eager to help the Blue Devils make another championship run before his new start at Colby college.
