Senior co-captain Jack Martin, a right tackle and defensive tackle for the football team announced his commitment to Amherst College on July 28 via Instagram.

Located in Massachusetts, Amherst is a prestigious academic school with an undergraduate class of 1,900 students. Martin will join Amherst’s Division III football program which is widely considered to be one of the best teams in Division III.

Martin said, “Two of the biggest factors in my decision to commit to Amherst were the elite academics and my great relationship with their coaches. Amherst is one of the best liberal arts colleges in the world and academics are very important to me. Ever since I met the coaches in April, I received calls, messages, and letters from them almost weekly and met them many times in person.”

Martin has been a starter since his sophomore year which is very rare for his position. Martin was also honored with being chosen as one of only two captains on the team this year. Captains are voted on by players, which is a testament to how strong of a leader he is. Martin said, “My biggest achievement of my high school career is being chosen as one of the captains for this season. I am incredibly thankful to have played for great coaches and with great players like Brandon Love and Max Romano who showed me how to be a leader.”

Martin’s positive effect on his teammates and those around him does not go unnoticed. Tom Langton, Martin’s offensive line coach said, “On the field, he leads by example. He practices very hard and doesn’t sit out any drills. He’s one of the better players on the team but he doesn’t act like it.”

It’s not just Martin’s passion for football that motivates him to play at the next level, but also his love for being part of a team. Martin said “Football is a very difficult sport and requires a lot of hard work and dedication every day. Everyone on the team goes through this together and we all play for each other. Because of this, we all have great relationships with each other on and off the field. My teammates are the people who inspire me to show up every day and give my maximum effort.”

Martin is looking forward to his final season as a Blue Devil, hoping to help lead the team to another successful season.
