Once a season, Westfield girls golf has the opportunity to play a match at Plainfield Country Club, a course known for its difficult holes and frequent bunkers. This did not affect the Blue Devils’ gameplay as they were able to easily conquer New Providence 207-246.
Plainfield is known for having one of the hardest courses on their schedule. One of the toughest elements is its difficult greens, which affected their putting. Senior co-captain Lily Patel said, “You can end up in any position on this course, and it’s really tough to make pars out here. Persevering through every shot and taking it one shot at a time is really important.”
Head coach Kevin Everly added to this, saying, “These greens are very treacherous and very fast. You’re bound to have some three-putts, but to be able to limit them, that’s what made Lily’s round so impressive.”
Patel was the star of this match, scoring 43, 5 over par, emphasizing her skill in the sport. Another strong golfer of the match was junior Sadie Pitigala who scored 53, the second-best score of the match. Pitigala said, “The biggest factor in our team’s success today was really the amount of work and practice we put in, and there were really good weather conditions today, so that definitely helped.”
The Blue Devils were also able to try something different this match by altering the lineup, with one of the new players being Pitigala. “We had the opportunity to get two new players out here, so it was good for them to get out and get accustomed to playing,” said Everly, “They did really well today.”
Westfield looks to carry their winning streak into the following matches and maintain their momentum through sectionals and states. Patel said, “We had our first match yesterday, which we won, and then a win today gives us some momentum into our final match of the week against Millburn.”
The Blue Devils will take on Millburn on March 26 at Echo Lake Country Club at 3:30 p.m., looking to continue their winning streak.
