It is often common that the first goal of every game has the ability to dictate how the rest of the game will go. For the boys lacrosse game against Wall, this was proven to be true. After junior Garret Ferguson sunk the ball into the back of the net within the first two minutes of play, it was clear that Westfield would be dominating the game. And so they did, edging a 15-5 victory over Wall, with six goals from Ferguson.

“We wanted to be consistent,” said senior captain Michael Marshall. “We had a big win, but we have to go against a much worse team and still keep that consistent energy”.

Coming off a hot win against #1 ranked team in New Jersey, Seton Hall Prep last Friday, the Blue Devils have gained confidence early on this season. Carrying this confidence, Ferguson kicked off the game with a hat trick within the first five minutes of the first quarter, giving Westfield a 3-0 lead. Wall, at least for the first quarter, did not back down and continued to play hard, scoring a goal to narrow the Blue Devil’s lead 3-1. Ultimately, the quarter ended with a goal from junior Colin Coyle and a goal from senior captain Cody Lam, increasing the score to 5-1.

In the second quarter, the Blue Devils doubled their score with two more goals by Ferguson, two more goals by Coyle to give him a hat trick and another goal by Lam. Unfortunately for Wall, they failed to score going into the half, the half ending 10-1 with Westfield leading.

The third quarter presented not much activity, however, Wall scored another goal; this goal was quickly diminished with two more goals in the quarter scored by Westfield.

To Wall’s credit, the players did not completely wave the white flag, as the team was able to muster up three more goals in the fourth quarter. Yet, the Blue Devils had matched these three goals, once again diminishing the progress of Wall’s team.

“We practiced a walkthrough of things we wanted to accomplish and the kids did it,” head coach William Wertheimer.

Although Westfield gave a great performance during this match up, the boys remained humble in their efforts and achievements. “I think we still didn’t come out fast enough,” said Ferguson. “We came out slow again today and we missed way too many shots”.

The Blue Devils will face Cranford away on Wednesday at 4:30 pm, determining if the hot streak will persist or the devils will fall.
