On April 9, the WHS girls golf team competed in a tri-match against Mount Saint Mary Academy and Somerville. The weather was colder than expected but the Blue Devils did not disappoint, as they beat Somerville 186-246 and MSMA 186-193.
The team competed in a four-count-four format, meaning only four golfers competed and had their scores count in the tri-match instead of the typical six. Senior co-captain Lily Patel said, “I think this format put a little more pressure on everyone, but everyone stepped up to the plate and we managed to get the win against both teams.” Patel finished both matches with a team-best for Westfield, shooting a first place finish against Somerville with a 40, and coming up just short of first place to Mount St. Mary.
Head coach Kevin Everly has watched his team grow as the season has progressed, aiming for a lower score every match. “This season we set a bar to shoot in the forties every match, and every single one of them did that today. I think we’re ready to move the bar lower and aim for below 45. A lot of them are already doing that, so I think we’re ready to set the bar even higher and shoot lower.”
Along with Patel, sophomore Amaya Isom stepped up for Westfield shooting a strong 48, ending only behind Patel in second place against Somerville and fourth against MSMA. Isom said, “In past matches I’ve let my guard down a bit after a bad hole. But, I felt today I had a strong recovery and was able to push through for a strong score.”
The Blue Devils followed with a pair of 49s from junior Sadie Pitigala and senior Chloe Martin.
Consistency among all four players proved important in their four-count-four format showing the ability for the team to play well in a different style of match.
Although the cold conditions made it difficult to score, the Blue Devils stayed composed in the match. With this strong start to the season, the Blue Devils are only continuing to build momentum for the upcoming matches. They look to make consistently lower scores and have a successful season.
The team will be back in action as they head to Heron Glen Golf Course to compete in the Red Devil Invitational on April 10.
