On August 1, rising senior Ben Seward announced his commitment to Stevens Institute of Technology for lacrosse via Instagram.
Seward has been proving his talent, hard work and physicality for three years now at the varsity level, making him a dependable option for Coach William Wertheimer’s team this upcoming season.
The Stevens Institute of Technology, located in Hoboken, NJ, offers prestigious academic resources alongside a competitive lacrosse program, which was ranked No. 13 in the country at the end of last season with a record of 15-4. It is a smaller school, with about 4,000 undergraduate students. Stevens competes at the Division III level in lacrosse, playing in the Middle Atlantic Conference and winning the conference championship this past season.
“Stevens is a great school with great connections due to its reputation and proximity to New York City,” Seward said. Stevens stood out to Seward from the start of his recruitment process. “I like Coach Peluso and the rest of the [Stevens] coaching staff, and I feel like they will help me grow as a player and person when I am there,” he said.
Aside from the great coaches and top-tier finishes in yearly rankings, Stevens appealed to Seward because “their business school has gained a lot more popularity and prestige.”
Seward has made a great impact on the lacrosse team over the past few seasons. He started as a long-stick midfielder in his sophomore and junior seasons, and looks to continue his high level of play going into his senior year. This past season, he made further strides on the offensive end, recording six goals and one assist, as well as picking up 60 ground balls. Two of those goals came in the Union County Championship game against Summit, in which he was awarded the game’s MVP by NJ.com.
A challenging senior campaign for Seward is needed to set him up for success at the collegiate level. “Although Westfield is a public school, we play one of the hardest schedules in the state, and I feel this experience will prepare me to play at the next level,” Seward said.
Seward looks to build off of a breakout junior season and carry momentum moving forward, as he looks to be a strong piece for Blue Devils lacrosse this upcoming season.
