Despite holding a higher ranking than Arthur L. Johnson, Westfield struggled on offense. By the end of the first quarter, the Blue Devils were unable to put points on the board as the Crusaders held them scoreless.

Junior Katie Walsh was an immediate threat to the Crusaders defense early in the second quarter. Backed up by the Blue Devils’ strong defense, it was apparent Westfield had the upper hand in this quarter.

However, despite the Blue Devils’ offensive efforts and a close breakaway shot by senior captain Ella McLane, the second quarter was scoreless.

Westfield’s defense came out looking very strong to begin the second half as the Crusaders had a difficult time pushing the ball to the offensive side of the field.

The Blue Devils’ goalies played a huge role in the defense’s success with strong leadership and various amazing saves.

A foul gave Westfield an opportunity with 7:50 left in the third quarter. Nevertheless, the Blue Devils were unable to capitalize due to the relentless Crusader defense. The score remained tied at 0-0 going into the fourth quarter.

Junior Sofia Tsarsi was phenomenal on offense as she made great passes to get her teammates in the position for promising goal-scoring opportunities. Westfield hoped these outstanding offensive contributions would remain constant in the fourth quarter.

An early foul on the Crusaders gave Westfield another opportunity to push ahead, but ALJ was quick to react. However, senior Julia Schneider answered with a tip-in goal to put the Blue Devils ahead 1-0.

Despite efforts from ALJ’s offense, Westfield’s defense kept them away from the net, securing a huge 1-0 victory.

“With the score 0-0 at halftime I knew we had to get a goal in quickly to gain more momentum and set the tone,” Schneider said. “We started to dominate and with a great assist from Katie Walsh I was ready on the pads of the goaltender to finish the job.”

The Blue Devils face Scotch Plains on Saturday in hopes of continuing their win streak.
