Coming off a dominant 49-19 win over Elizabeth, Westfield looked to keep their momentum going in their game against Scotch Plains-Fanwood. Led by junior, Sophie Lane, the Blue Devils soared to a 58-32 victory.

From the opening tip-off, the Blue Devils dominated the game. Lane and junior Megan Logan started the scoring for Westfield and continued to find the hoop throughout the game. Lane ended with 16 points while Logan finished with 10 points in addition to 4 blocks.

Looking forward, Lane said, “I think always going into a game with the same mentality is important. Never underestimating your opponent and always going in hard every game and playing the best basketball is what we need to do.”

At the half, the Blue Devils were winning 32-14 and knew they had potential to continue to widen the score gap. However, Westfield’s offense was not the only act that led them to their win. Lane said, “Today I think what really worked was our defensive effort and sharing the ball with everyone, so we were able to get extra passes.”

Agreeing with Lane, head coach Liz McKeon said, “It all starts with defense. Then, sharing the ball, running our offense, looking at the cuts backdoor, and finding the pick and roll are all things that contributed to their success.”

Going into the game, the Blue Devils felt confident with their past wins and knowing that they needed to be focused on two players, seniors Maggie McNulty and Marin Pecarsky. Senior co-captain Catie Carayannopolous said, “I think by the end we hadshut down their two main players, and they weren’t doing much, and [SPF head coach] actually had to take them out.”

With the win today, Westfield improved to 10-2 on the season. Carayannopolous said, “We  need to keep starting strong. I think when we score off of the first jump ball then there is good momentum for the rest of the game. I think if we get that first basket we dominate the rest of the game. ”

Looking forward, McKeon said, “We always have stuff to work on. We are going to continue to work on the little things and work on our cohesiveness. We know that we always have a mark on our back and everybody wants to take us down, so we want to make sure that we are prepared for anything and everything.”

The Blue Devils continued their dominance through Union County, beating Johnathan Dayton, 65-32, and will face Union at 4 p.m. at Union High School on Tuesday.
