Just minutes after puck drop, senior captain Andrew Lisnock set the tone for what would be total domination by the Blue Devils as Lisnock tucked a beautifully placed wrist shot between the twin red pipes. Fans dressed in a variety of American red, white and blue attire promptly thrashed against the boards in uproar and excitement to the dismay of authorities and West Essex patrons alike. The animalistic behaviour fittingly best characterizes the physical nature and ecstatic fan presence of Westfield’s season-opener at Richard J. Codey Arena, nicknamed the Zoo.
Westfield boys ice hockey came out firing on all cylinders in their season opener, defeating West Essex 8-0 in a commanding performance. The victory was a promising start for the bigstatessports.com preseason-ranked No. 7 squad with a mix of returning talent and fresh faces, showcasing their depth and team chemistry early in the season.
Lisnock was all smiles after the game, attributing the team’s high energy to their pre-game routine. “We were super pumped up for this game,” Lisnock said. “We had a team dinner last night with the whole team and that really built up our energy.” It was clear that the team came into the game ready to make a statement, and their performance reflected that enthusiasm.
In a game where the veteran players shone, the younger players also played pivotal roles that were recently vacated by graduated talent like Aidan Wilson and Jackson Chicola. Lisnock highlighted the contributions of underclassmen who stepped up in a big way. “Some of our younger guys like sophomore Matt Comandatore and junior Liam Reed really stepped up today and made big impacts on the game which led to our success.” Their ability to contribute early in the season is a promising sign for the team’s future.
Senior captain and second-year starter goalie Troy Conover played a critical role in the day’s success, posting a shutout in his first game back. Conover acknowledged the challenges of starting the season with a new defensive lineup. “It being our first game of the season and us having a new defensive core, we definitely had to try some new things in this first week,” Conover explained. “Despite having many new guys on the squad, we executed very well.” His confidence and leadership on the ice were evident, as the defense held strong throughout the game, allowing few scoring opportunities for West Essex.
Westfield’s head coach Joe Bertucci praised his team’s overall depth, especially given the offseason losses. “My favorite part about this team is our depth and youth,” said Bertucci. “We lost ten seniors from last year and didn’t skip a beat this year.” The team’s ability to maintain a high level of play despite the turnover from last year’s roster was a testament to their strong development system and commitment to team success.
As the team looks to build on this impressive win, it’s clear that Westfield has the talent and cohesion to make a deep run this season. With a mix of experienced players and rising stars, they appear poised to continue their dominance on the ice. If this game was any indication, Westfield’s 2025 season is shaping up to be one to remember.
