Westfield girls basketball continued their undefeated streak with their win against Union Catholic yesterday, 59-36. Senior tri-captain Darby Hubner gained a career high with three 3-pointers, helping to motivate the team to keep up the energy.
The one and only time the Blue Devils were down was after the first shot of the game. After that, Westfield gained momentum and kept it high throughout the rest of the game.
Both teams committed many fouls against one another, resulting in free throws on both sides; however, Westfield sank most of theirs, which gave them a comfortable lead. The Blue Devils stayed strong defensively throughout the game, which is something they had struggled with in prior games.
Hubner said, “The team did a really great job at rotating quickly and recognizing when they needed to help each other.”
Union Catholic gained most of their points in the second half, where they became more aggressive, forcing turnovers on Westfield. Junior Mairin Fowler said, “There were a couple of stretches where we got frazzled, overwhelmed and turned the ball over a bit.”
The Blue Devils went into this focused on playing a better overall game. They wanted to propel on offense and stay strong on defense. The team worked well together, led by senior tri-captain Sophie Lane’s 17 points and Hubner’s 13 points.
Westfield had many opportunities to score, through skillfully cutting to the basket and fast breaks. They remained aggressive even as they tried to strengthen their lead, even when up multiple points.
In their upcoming games, Westfield will work to keep their record undefeated and work together. Head coach Liz McKeon said, “We will continue to play unselfish basketball, which will lead to the games going the way we want.”
The Blue Devils will play West Orange at home this Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
