On Thursday, the girls basketball team hosted Roselle Catholic, looking to win their third straight game. The team dominated from the beginning, jumping out to an early 17-0 lead. They never looked back, winning with a final score of 59-42.
All three captains led the way for the Blue Devils, each finishing with double digit points, and both Megan Logan and Sophie Lane had double-doubles, in points and rebounds. Logan tallied 4 blocks, reaching the 200-career blocks milestone. Strong team defense proved to be the deciding factor in the team’s third straight win. Logan said, “I take pride in my intensity on defense so it means a lot to get that title, and I think the entire team had a lot of energy today locking them down.”
Heading into halftime, the Blue Devils were in control, leading 39-17. They carried this momentum into the second half, scoring six points on their first three possessions, causing Roselle Catholic to call a timeout within the first two minutes.
The team’s offense was just as strong as their defense, connecting on 5 threes as a team and having 16 team assists on 24 made shots. Senior tri-captain Darby Hubner said, “I think we moved the ball really well on offense. Sharing the ball and making the extra pass to an open teammate definitely helped our offensive performance.”
As the end of the regular season nears, the girls look to continue their successful season, building off of their last three wins and hoping to end the regular season on a high note. Hubner said, “It’s another conference win, and those are always important. We’re just going to keep moving forward and use this as more experience for the team.”
Bouncing back from a three-game losing streak spanning from Jan. 11 to the 15, Westfield was able to turn things around, now looking to win 4 straight. Head coach Liz McKeon said, “We have been really focused, and it all started with team defense. We had two rough games against West Orange and New Providence, but in our game against Franklin, we really stepped it up defensively, and I think that propelled us forward, allowing us to get back on track.” McKeon added, “If we lost three games sporadically throughout the season, nobody would care. We had a rough week and I’m proud of them for bouncing back in the way that they did.”
The Blue Devils look to continue their dominant season, as they take on Ramapo tomorrow at home at noon.
