Westfield hoped to build off their triumphant win against Lawrenceville in Tuesday’s matchup against Toms River East, but the Blue Devils were unable to capitalize, resulting in their third draw of the season.
Despite the county and state tournaments peeking over the horizon, neither team exhibited end-of-season energy. Westfield and Toms River East were very evenly matched, making it seemingly impossible for either team to find the back of the net.
One major difference in the Blue Devil’s backline was the addition of junior goalie Danny Garcia. Junior Simon Gunzberg, the typical starter, was out in yesterday’s match, giving Garcia his first varsity start. Garcia said, “I’ve always waited for my moment and I always try to play the best I can when I get the opportunity.”
Garcia did exactly that, stepping up in a big moment and filling Gunzberg’s big shoes, undeniably showing his capability. Senior co-captain Ethan Wade said, “It was so much fun to play with him. He was really really good, and delivered in a high-pressure match-up.” Garcia’s performance is a testament to the strength of the Westfield soccer program, from head-to-toe everyone on this roster can compete.
This season the Blue Devils have had a difficult time capitalizing on offensive chances. The team was able to move the ball around efficiently, but ultimately could not activate the scoreboard. Head coach Eric Shaw said, “We’ve created a ton of chances in the last few matches, it’s the composure…a little bit more composure to bury the chances.”
Westfield’s morale was rocked in the first half after senior co-captain Niko Pierce went down with an injury. The team had to do their best to fill the of a talented player, but also a leader and mentor on the team. Luckily, the Blue Devils have a multitude of skilled players who can step up when needed. Shaw said, “We rely on the experience of all the players… the whole group has to rally around those moments that are tough.”
Tomorrow at 4:00 p.m., the Blue Devils are focused on capitalizing off of offensive chances to win in their first Union County Tournament at home against Union. Junior forward Sam Judka said, “The team is going to be hungry for goals and we will be able to put the ball in the back of the net.”
