Senior Veer Agarwal, outside hitter for the Westfield boys volleyball team, announced his commitment to New York University on Feb. 17 via Instagram.

NYU is a private university located in New York City, NY, with a student body of about 60,000 according to usanews.com, and currently has 23 NCAA Division III teams. NYU is a part of the University Athletic Association, one of the most competitive conferences in Division III athletics.

“My decision was based on wanting a balance between school and athletics,” said Agarwal. “Because NYU is a Division III school, it’s going to be less of a commitment.”

Agarwal started playing volleyball during seventh grade, but didn’t begin to play competitively until eighth grade. He went on to have an extremely successful career with the Blue Devils, including holding the school record for kills in a single season.

“Veer always has a lot of energy on the court and every time he goes up to hit the ball, you can really see how passionate he is about the game,” said senior teammate Daniel Flores. “It’s hard to find players that can receive Veer’s best hits, let alone receive them well.”

Standing at 6’4”, Agarwal shows clear authority on the court, using his height to his advantage. “Being primarily a hitter, he provides a reliable, strong offense to the team,” said Flores.

Agarwal made first team All-Conference and All-County both his sophomore and junior season while also earning the titles of All-Junior and second team All-State his junior year. However, his high school career isn’t over yet. “I’m hoping to make it farther in the state tournament this year and I’m looking forward to competing for the county title,” said Agarwal.

Looking forward to his time at NYU, Agarwal said, “I’m ready to work hard over the summer and during the offseason to earn some playing time.”
