Mason Marino, a senior who throws the shot put and the javelin, recently announced his commitment to Sacred Heart University. On May 12, Marino set his PR in the javelin at the Union County Conference Championships with a throw of 171 feet 5 inches to help him win the individual championship.
On the reasoning behind his commitment to Sacred Heart, Marino said, “As soon as I stepped on campus I really liked the environment and met some really great people on the team.” He added, “They just hired a new throwing coach who has some really good experience coaching high-level athletes, so that was a big motivation as well.”
Some other schools that highly recruited Marino were Bryant University, College of the Holy Cross and Gettysburg College. But ultimately, Sacred Heart felt like home and was the best option for him.
This fall, Marino will take his talents to Fairfield, CT, and enroll as a Pioneer. The Pioneers are a member of the Northeast Conference (NEC) at the Division I level, and other notable schools within the conference are Wagner College and Fairleigh Dickinson University.
This week, Marino and company will head to Hub Stine Field in Plainfield to compete in the Union County Championships. On what he is looking forward to at the meet, Marino said, “I’m hoping I’ll be able to score big points for the team along with the other incoming athletes to win a conference championship.”
This winning mentality will be a huge addition to the Pioneers as hopefully he can cap off his high school career with a conference championship, which he could then use to bring that winning mindset to Fairfield this fall.
