On Jan. 15, senior football captain Max Cho announced his commitment to continue his football career at Union College.

Cho had a loud year to say the least. He racked up over 1900 passing yards, over 200 rushing yards and 25 total touchdowns through the Blue Devils’ 11 games. The first year starter led the Blue Devils to a 6-5 season, falling short in the semifinal round of the North 2, Group 5 sectional tournament to New Jersey powerhouse, Philipsburg. Cho was also recognized as the Union County Player of the Year, an impressive achievement given the talent in the county.

Cho is not only a standout quarterback, but also a javelin star, winning the North 2, Group 4 sectional tournament his sophomore year. Cho feels that, “Javelin helps a lot with football because it helps with arm strength, so my arm never gets fatigued during the season. The lifting program also gets me strong.”

Union College is a private liberal arts college located in Schenectady, New York. The school competes at the Division III level in the Liberty League against schools like Hobart and Ithaca. Union had a 10-2 record in the 2023 season, finishing second in their division. Historically, they are regarded as one of the better Division III football teams, and their success is still seen today.

As to why he chose Union, Cho said, “I picked Union College because it is a great academic school and has a great football program. There were other schools I was interested in like Colby College, but Union was the clear choice for me.”

“I would describe Max’s leadership as one of the best I’ve seen. The way he can get the whole offense going with how he plays and the fire he plays with is one of the reasons for our offense’s success,” said Cho’s teammate, Max Romano.  “As a teammate, he’s the guy who you can joke around with, but once it’s time to lock in, he’s the first one to do it,” Romano added.

Following his breakout season, Cho is looking forward to spring track where he aims to “reclaim [his] sectional title and break the Westfield javelin record.” After suffering a season-ending knee injury last spring, Cho is eager to get back on the field and get his name in Westfield’s record books.

Cho is excited to showcase his skills at the next level and “compete for the starting spot [his] freshman year.”
