Senior Garrett Ferguson, an attackman for the lacrosse team, announced his commitment to Washington and Lee University on July 31st via Instagram.

Washington and Lee is a private liberal arts university in Lexington, Virginia. The school has an undergraduate population of approximately 1,900 students and competes as a Division III program in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

Academics has always been an important value for Ferguson, so throughout his recruitment process, that factor was equally as important as the sport itself. Ferguson said, “It was the best balance of academics and lacrosse that I could find. It is a smaller school which I like better, I couldn’t really see myself at a big school and I really liked the campus.”

Ferguson has been on the team since he was a sophomore and stunned the state with a breakout season during his junior year. He recorded the team’s high for goals, tallying a total of 65 goals throughout the season. Ferguson recorded the second-highest overall points for the Blue Devils in their 2023 season, including a dominating seven-goal performance in the state championship game.

However, surprisingly enough, Ferguson was not always a standout player. He said, “I feel like in seventh and eighth grade I plateaued, I wasn’t developing like everyone else, and that made me practice harder, so by ninth and tenth grade I was better than I would’ve been.”

The Washington and Lee commit brings discipline, work ethic and spark to the lacrosse field. Colin Coyle, who has been a club and high school teammate of Ferguson’s for multiple years, said, “Playing with Garrett makes lacrosse so much easier and more fun, he makes others around him better and is very reliable and trustworthy on the field.”

Ferguson is looking forward to his senior season of high school lacrosse. He said, “I love that lacrosse gets my mind off things. I like to compete, and whenever I am feeling anxious I can just go and play lacrosse as an escape.”

He aims to work on his dodging skills, speed and strength before he leaves for college, and his passion for the game will drive him to do so.
