Abi Mokrzycki, senior attack and draw specialist for the WHS girls varsity lacrosse team, announced her commitment to Swarthmore College via Instagram on June 29.
Swarthmore College is a private liberal arts college located in Swarthmore, PA. With just a 7 percent acceptance rate and being ranked fourth for national liberal arts colleges, Swarthmore is seen as a very prestigious school according to usnews.com.
During Mokrzycki’s commitment process, academics were top priority, ruling out the two prior Division I offers she received. Mokrzycki was between Babson and Swarthmore, she said, “Swarthmore stood out to me as I wanted a school with rigorous academics as well as a solid lacrosse program. Swarthmore is top in the country in college rankings and has a great team environment on the lacrosse field so I knew that is where I wanted to go.”
Swarthmore, a Division III program, competes in the Centennial Conference. Last season, the Garnets finished 8-7.
As Mokrzycki gets ready to begin her time as a Garnet, she looks forward to “be an aggressive scorer, but also a team player” emphasizing that “[Mokrzycki] wants to add to the positive environment the program already displays.”
Head coach for the WHS girls lacrosse team, Kathryn Dasilva explained how “it’s been rewarding to watch Abi’s confidence grow as an attacker.”
Last season, Mokrzycki contributed to Westfield’s success with 80 draw controls, and 15 goals. Mokrzycki also set the all time record for WHS in the most draw controls in a season as well as the most draw controls in a player’s career.
Erin Hazard, a defender for the girls lacrosse team explained how Mokrzycki is “an extremely hard worker who contributes to the team in so many ways.” Hazard also explained how “[Mokrzycki] knows her role on the team and excels in the things she does best while also helping to make her teammates stand out. She gives full effort every game and fights for every draw control.”
Before heading to Swarthmore, Mokrzycki has one final season as a Blue Devil where she looks forward to “setting a positive example for the underclassmen through my actions on the field as well as continue to contribute to the program both through smart plays and an encouraging attitude.”
