Frustration and disappointment hung heavy in the air as Westfield walked off the field after a 3-1 loss to Monroe. Every season has a setback, and this moment of adversity will be an opportunity for reflection for the Blue Devils.
The matchup was not a game that showed Westfield’s potential as a team. Senior co-captain Alex Rokhsar said, “We didn’t come into this game with the same energy as Monroe did. They started off with the front foot, getting an early goal, and that sets the tone for the rest of the game.”
Going into Saturday’s game, the Blue Devils knew they were in for a competitive matchup. “Monroe’s always a team on the flip side that has some athletic players, a few good technical players, but a team that you know is going to come and play,” said head coach Eric Shaw.
In the first 15 minutes of the game, Monroe went up by 2 goals, coming off strong and aggressive. Rokhsar said, “It’s always how you start the game, and if we can’t start on the high, then it’s going to be a struggle.”
The Blue Devils gained momentum after halftime, dominating for much of the second half as they maintained possession and composure. “As we settled into the game, we showed more energy,” said junior Reean Dias. “We shut down their best players and we were able to play the ball, and that translated to the second half.”
Monroe’s early lead was a clear setback for Westfield as they struggled to capitalize on their chances in the attacking third. However, senior goalkeeper Simon Gunzberg and the defense showed resolve in the second half, limiting Monroe’s chances.
In the last five minutes of the game, Westfield persevered despite their slim chance of making a comeback. Senior Joaquin Wilkes was able to find the net and get one for the Blue Devils, a moment of validation for the team despite the loss.
After three competitive games this week, Westfield looks to recover for their matchup next Saturday. “In a lot of minutes, it’s hard for everybody and their legs. I think we need good recovery and good training this week, going into Saturday’s game against Seton Hall Prep,” said Rokhsar. “We should go 100 percent and get a good result.”
Westfield will play Seton Hall Prep next Saturday at home at 11:30 a.m., looking to bounce back after a trying but enlightening week of competition.
