On Nov. 16, junior Mila Montero announced her commitment to play tennis at Colgate University via Instagram.

Montero began her tennis career at the age of six. As an individual player, she plays for the United States Tennis Association. According to tennisrecruiting.net, Montero is classified as a four-star recruit and holds an overall record of 36-16. Montero is ranked No. 6 in the state and 138 nationally, for her age group.

Opponent, senior Rutgers commit Savannah Cohen said, “I played [Montero] about a month ago. She is an aggressive player, with a lot of deep, winning shots. She was a good sport and it was fun playing against her.”

Montero’s highly competitive individual career as an athlete prevented her from participating on the WHS tennis team. Montero said, “My practice schedule is very rigorous and I do not have time to also play for the high school.”

Since tennis has always been an important part of Montero’s life, she knew that playing tennis in college was the path she wanted to take. Montero said, “My recruiting process went very smoothly and my coaches were a big help in the process.”

Throughout the process, Montero said, “I was between Georgetown and Colgate, but I just really love Colgate. It is not too big and the academics are very good. My sister also plays tennis there and it will be exciting to get a year with her.”

Montero’s sister, Sophia Montero, graduated from WHS in 2023 and also continued her tennis career at Colgate University. Montero said, “At first, I was against going to the same school as my sister, but I think the fact that we only have one season together will be special.”

Colgate University is a private, liberal arts college in Hamilton, NY. The university has a 12.4 percent acceptance rate with highly competitive academics and athletics. Academically, Colgate University is ranked No. 22 in National Liberal Arts Colleges. The school’s athletics competes in Division I and in the Patriot League.

Montero will join Colgate’s tennis team in the fall of 2026. Their team is highly successful as they are ranked No. 4 in the Patriot League. Montero said, “I really loved the coaches and the team. The dynamic seemed like a place where I would fit in.”
