Michael Marshall, a long stick midfielder and defenseman for the boys lacrosse team, announced his commitment to Cornell on Sept. 7 via social media.
Marshall attended Seton Hall Prep his freshman year, but transferred to Westfield High School as a sophomore. He made varsity, but a back injury limited his playing time. This summer, however, Marshall was nothing short of spectacular. He won two championships with his club team, Leading Edge, and was invited to the NLF 120 showcase, which is for the 120 best lacrosse players in the class.
Marshall will be joining a Cornell squad that finished last season with a record of 14-5, before ultimately falling just short in the national championship last season to Maryland.
Marshall said he originally ruled out Ivy League schools due to the grueling academics, but he found Cornell was the school for him. “The guys were so nice, especially my favorite player who played XBOX with me and took me to lunch,” Marshall said. He added, “It was the best day of my life.”
Being an Ivy League school, Marshall harped on the fact that the networking at Cornell is excellent, and if his career as a professional lacrosse player doesn’t work out, he will go into sports management at Cornell’s ILR school.
Before becoming a member of the Big Red family, Marshall, a junior, will have two more seasons as a Blue Devil. In his last two seasons, he made it clear that he wants to leave high school as a winner, hoping to win county and state titles before heading to upstate New York.
