The girls hockey team opened its season at home Monday, but the festivities ended immediately after the puck drop. Immaculate Heart scored three goals in the opening minutes of the game and the game was quickly out of reach for the Blue Devils. Westfield was simply overmatched; they had trouble maintaining possession, winning faceoffs and facilitating any legitimate scoring opportunities.

When speaking on those difficulties, senior co-captain Lillie Martel said that they are “looking to improve our forecheck and breakout.”

The first period ended with a score of 5–0 in favor of Immaculate Heart. Hopes of a comeback were dim. Immaculate Heart continued its route by posting three goals in the 2nd period.

Unwilling to give up, Westfield was able to score three goals in the 3rd period. Goals were scored by freshman Ella Delaney, junior Miriam Walsh and senior Olivia Rosario. “[The goals] definitely raised our spirits,” said senior co-captain Joelle Tannenbaum. “A lot of us have never played together before, so as the game progressed we adapted to each other and scored a couple of goals in the last period.”

When the final horn sounded, Immaculate Heart remained victorious with a 10-3 win. Westfield will travel to play Chatham on Friday at 8:00. “We have a pretty good shot at beating them,” said Tannenbaum. “We played them really well last year.”
