The Westfield girls golf team starts off its season this Friday, at home, against Mount Saint Mary.

Westfield finished with a record of 3-8 last year, with two home wins and one away win. The Blue Devils saw Eden Blitt, last season’s only senior, graduate. The team consists of three seniors this year, and is led by coaches Jayne Summers and Suzanne LaForge.

The current golfers have been able to create chemistry as they are playing with each other more frequently. Coach Suzanne LaForge has seen good progress with her team as she said, “Last year we had mostly new players and were focusing on the basics—team camaraderie and striking the ball well enough to get close to the green.” She added that the team was able to succeed in these utilities. The team is young and has the opportunity to develop over the course of this season.

Senior Elise Curran believes the team is ready to make a big stride. “I have seen lots of determination and focus at practice so hopefully our season will show major improvements from last year.”

The Blue Devils will face off against Morristown-Beard twice this season, a team they lost to by narrow margins last season. Morristown-Beard finished 16-3 last season, so this close matchup shows the potential that Westfield can reach this season.

Coach LaForge is excited for this season, saying, “We have some younger talent this year which is helping with the growth and competitiveness of the team.” Westfield will be playing in more matches this year than last year, as “the local courses have been very generous providing course time,” said LaForge.

Despite last year’s struggles, Curran is optimistic about this season, as she is “excited to work through struggles and progress as a team.”

With a strong senior class and solid underclassmen, Westfield looks to deliver on what could be a fun and successful season.
