The WHS Varsity Field Hockey Team has faced tough competition this season, having moved up a conference level since last year. Through competitive games and a demanding practice schedule, the team has been driven to success by numerous factors, one of which is team camaraderie.

Through social media, specifically Instagram, the team has established partnerships with Ono Bowls, Reves Smoothie Café, and The Juice House. These fun activities and reels serve as a way to bring together all levels of the program. Head coach Corrine Varhley said, “Bringing in the youth and making it attractive by promoting a fun environment is something that Instagram helps us do. Partnering with these açai places gives us publicity through their accounts, while also promoting local businesses.”

This initiative began in August, when the team posted a reel highlighting their personal favorite açai spot. Through this, they earned team meals, discounts and gift cards to a variety of locally owned businesses. In the post, Reves Smoothie Cafe commented, “54 gift cards are on the way to you!”, followed by a post on their account highlighting the collaboration.

These partnerships have given the team opportunities to bond off the field, outside of a field hockey setting. Senior tri-captain Riley Carr said, “When we received the Reves gift cards, we decided to go after a game. After playing really hard, it was a great way to cool off and recharge. The whole team was able to talk and bond while eating our açai bowls.”

This kind of team bonding activity off the field leads to stronger team camaraderie on the field. Taking a team outside of their athletic environment gives the players a chance to connect with each other on a level deeper than their sport. For the field hockey team, these partnerships have given them that opportunity.

Senior tri-captain Chloe Martin said, “Taking the team out of a field hockey environment has proven to be beneficial. We have seen improvement on the field because of strong team camaraderie off the field. Having the chance to support local businesses is also a plus.”

Additionally, Varhley values fostering a fun environment for the years to come. “Eventually, the girls who are playing on the eighth-grade, freshman, and JV teams will be on varsity in the upcoming years. Fostering a sense of togetherness through all levels prepares them for their future varsity careers.”

As the camaraderie and bonds built off the field continue to strengthen their performance on it, the field hockey team looks forward to more opportunities like these as they continue through the rest of the season.
