Senior Sergio Cabrera, a star football player, announced his commitment to Susquehanna University on Sunday via Instagram. Cabrera is a multi-sport athlete as he is also a member of the wrestling team.

Cabrera, a dominant defensive lineman who normally plays on the edge, is labeled as a major threat to quarterbacks after recording dozens of tackles this season and is one of the sack leaders for the Blue Devils. Playing the center offensively throughout his younger years of football, Cabrera transformed into a defensive lineman in high school and made his first varsity start by his junior year.

Using his veteran leadership, Cabrera was a key contributor to the Blue Devils this season as they had an impressive 8-3 record.

“The season had its ups and downs, but we are a family and I’m super grateful I was able to work with this group of guys,” Cabrera said.

Cabrera will be joining the River Hawks next fall, a private liberal arts college that competes at the Division III level in the Centennial Conference. Susquehanna is located in Selinsgrove, PA, near the banks of the Susquehanna River, and competes at an extremely high level. The River Hawks ended last season with an impressive 10-1 record and took first place in their conference.

“I chose Susquehanna because I was looking for a school that thrived in academics and sports and that’s exactly what they had,” Cabrera said. “They were ranked 11 in the country which automatically drew my attention to them.”

Another key aspect that drove Cabrera to become a River Hawk was the team camaraderie, similar to Westfield’s.

Cabrera said, “The Westfield team was such a great group of guys that felt like a brotherhood and they impacted me because we all pushed each other to work hard and that is something I apply to my everyday life now.”

Cabrera was also recruited by other schools including St. John Fisher University and Springfield College, both compete at the Division III level. However, Cabrera realized that the academics and athletics Susquehanna prides itself on was the perfect fit for him.

Eager to show his defensive talent and aggressiveness on the field, Cabrera is looking forward to his next season of football. “I’m looking forward to competing at such a major collegiate level with lots of talent and competing with my new teammates to bring home a championship.”
