The energy, the gameplay, the crowd. Everything came together for the Blue Devils as they earned this senior day victory. Westfield came into this game on a four-game losing streak. Although their season started 5-1, the start of the new year crushed their winning record.

Senior Will Kirby said, “We really needed this win. We played four really good teams which killed our morale but to win a game like this, especially on senior day, was definitely what we needed to get back on track.”

After a senior day ceremony, the Blue Devils came out eager and excited with a jam-packed gym. Westfield scored the first basket and then went on to take a 7-0 before Pingry called their first timeout. Not long after Pingry made their first basket. The Blue Devils used the first few minutes of the game as a catalyst for the rest of the game.

Moving forward in the matchup the Blue Devils were able to show a lot of versatility on the offensive end of the court. Senior Jonny Sica said, “We came out firing and everyone was hitting shots, almost everyone was able to score.” Agreeing with the wide range of producers on the court, head coach Jim McKeon said,  “The more we do together the better we all look and I think that showed today.”

Throughout the game the Pingry’s offense was not able to produce against a strong Blue Devil defense. In the third quarter Westfield held Pingry to scoring only one point. Kirby said, “Our defense was really good today, they only had 37 points. Anytime you can hold a team under 40 points it’s gonna be a lot easier to get the win.”

Coming off of their losing streak, the Blue Devils knew they had to change their dynamic on the court and focus on the basics. Senior co-captain Enzo Ferraro said, “Earlier this week we were losing these games because of turnovers but today I think we really stepped it up and kept the ball in our hands.”

Now with a 6-5 record Westfield is looking to get on a winning streak. The Blue Devils are back in action Thursday at 7 p.m. away at Roselle Catholic. McKeon said, “We are going to build off of all the success we had today but also try to learn from our mistakes. We understand how we can be better, but we are going to keep working on the stuff that we are good at.”
