There was 2:26 left in the third quarter, Westfield was up 38-17 in what was becoming a runaway victory. Union brought up the ball to center court in the hopes of scraping together any offense they could find, only for senior Megan Logan to quickly capitalize off a wrongly timed pass for a steal and an easy, uncontested layup, cementing the outcome further in what was long obvious before the final whistle.
The Blue Devils toppled the Union 50-29 in a game that was lopsided competitively the whole way through. Westfield outscored the Farmers 15-6 in the first quarter and never looked back, with senior talent in Logan and Sophie Lane combining for 30 points in their first round win of the Union County Tournament.
“I think with it being the first round of counties, we know we have a long way to go. Getting this first one under our belt prepares us well for Oak Knoll on Saturday,” responded fellow senior Darby Hubner on the win’s significance. Logan shared the same caution about taking today’s convincing win and looking too far into the future, “we need to focus on winning the next game and getting past that first. We’ll come back to practice tomorrow and begin building from there.”
The last time Oak Knoll and Westfield met was in 2024 in the county tournament where the Blue Devils fell 44-33. Immediately following their win in order to prepare for their imminent match, head coach Liz McKeon put specific emphasis on how the team will work on, “moving on offense and not just standing around the three-point line, cutting backdoor, making bounce passes.”
When asked about any offensive choppiness the team experienced in their performance, the coach excused any sluggishness, “We haven’t played in a week, so maybe that was part of it. Just knocking any cobwebs off. We fought tooth and nail, but unfortunately we weren’t making the best decisions today.”
Although the seniors had a significant impact in the day’s outcome, the win would not be as convincingly found if it were not for players like junior Mairin Fowler, whose impact could be found in her 8 assists and 4 rebounds. Freshman Gella Hollins also notably put up 11 points and 4 rebounds. Both of whom will look to follow their success Saturday.
