On Sept. 11, senior Anthony Bulger announced via Instagram that he has committed to continue his academic and athletic career at New Jersey City University.
Bulger has been a key member of the Blue Devils baseball team throughout his high school career. Last season, the Blue Devils posted a strong 20-7 record and advanced all the way to the Group 4 state final, where they ultimately fell to Cherokee, 6-0.
After recording 12 hits and 13 RBIs last season, Bulger is determined to keep pushing forward. One of his standout moments came in a rivalry matchup against Elizabeth, when he delivered a walk-off single to bring in the winning run and secure a 1-0 victory over the Minutemen.
Varsity baseball head coach Jay Cook has watched Bulger grow within the program and believes he has a promising future. “Anthony has been a part of all levels of the program and works very hard each year to get to the next level,” Cook said. “He is a great teammate and player and continues to prove himself every day.”
NJCU is a public university in Jersey City, New Jersey, situated just outside New York City, offering students numerous internships and opportunities. With a student body of about 4,200, it provides a smaller, close-knit campus environment.
During the summer, Bulger plays club baseball for the Richmond County Baseball Club. One of his coaches also serves as an assistant coach at NJCU and guided him through the recruiting process. “Two other kids on my club team also committed to NJCU, and that helped make me feel more comfortable during the whole process,” Bulger said.
The NJCU Gothic Knights compete in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) at the NCAA Division III level. The Gothic Knights finished last season with a 13-26-1 record but are looking to improve in the upcoming year. One of their standout victories from the 2024–25 season was a 20-1 win over Ramapo College.
With one season left before he progresses into his college career, Bulger wants to finish strong with Westfield. “I am most excited for the state run this year because we got so close last year, and for my final season, I want to win it all,” he said.
